Autumn Exhibitions Launch Night at Kala Sangam
Thursday, 15 November 2012 from 18:30 to 20:00 (GMT)
Bradford, United Kingdom
A special preview evening for the launch of two exhibitions examining the cultural heritage of south Asia and Asians in Bradford:
- Shalwar Kameez photography exhibition by Womenzone
- Cultural Connections exhibition by Oriental Arts
*Please note that Mr Ilango's 'Odissi Series' exhibition will no longer be showing at Kala Sangam Arts Centre this season, but is now scheduled instead for May 2013.
Shalwar Kameez is a traditional dress worn by both women and men in south and central Asia. This exhibition, part of a heritage project by Bradford Womenzone, captures memories of elderly women who arrived from the south Asian subcontinent in the early 1950s to Bradford and ended up working as seamstresses.
The project will explore the history of the garments as they have changed in time by taking on western and global fashion trends and its development within the textile industry in the UK from the early 1950s to the present day.
If you would like to share your story for the exhibition, please contact Mandeep Samra, Heritage Project Coordinator at Womenzone, by phone on (01274) 665 270 or by email on: firstname.lastname@example.org
Funded by Heritage Lottey Fund.
